I picked up one such leaf which had fallen to the ground just before entering Al Huda this morning and kept it in my bag thinking there’s so much to learn and share from Allah’s creation.
The dua which began emanating from my heart upon witnessing these dynamic trees and leaves was:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اَحْسِنْ عَاقِبَتَنَا فِی الْاُمُوْرِکُلِّھَا وَاَجِرْنَا مِنْ خِزْیِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْاٰخِرَةِ
Such encounters with Allah’s creation within our natural surroundings in the Autumn season remind me of many life lessons:
🌱 Prompt obedience
🌿 Beautiful Patience
🍂 Perseverance with focus
🍁 Leaving a legacy
🌴 Giving selflessly
🌳 Acceptance with hope
🌲 Submission with dignity
And the list can go on and on!
In our Tafseer class today we learnt in verse 84 of Surah al Isra:
قُلْ كُلٌّ يَعْمَلُ عَلَىٰ شَاكِلَتِهِ فَرَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ هُوَ أَهْدَىٰ سَبِيلًا
Say, “Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way.”
This made me think of how our unique shakilah (demeanor and personality) is influenced by our external environment to some extent but more closely linked to our inner state. When our iman increases through Allah’s recognition and His Divine Guidance, what we do with our faculties becomes more beautiful and effective. I asked myself: What is my shakilah and how can I beautify it? Are my ways beautiful in Allah’s sight?
This week in Sahih Bukhari class we have been learning about the ettiquette of eating and drinking with moderation and sharing these blessings with others. Implementing these Prophetic ways inculcates in us the spirit of giving and not just taking. The personality of the Prophet ﷺ remains a beautiful and radiant example despite the fact that he had simple and limited resources. Many times he owned very little but shared and smiled the most; beautiful in the inner and outer levels in all circumstances!
In Fiqh al Quloob class today we began learning about ehsan and it’s manifestations and long term benefits. The greatest form of ehsan is belief in Allah, His Oneness, obeying Him, repeatedly turning to Him and worshipping Him as if you can see Him.
I asked myself: Is my connection with my Rabb beautiful and sound? Through which steps can I improve the quality of this significant connection?
Later in the evening, I was asked by my child about how it’s possible for Muslim women to wear the hijab in all seasons and especially the summer when it’s hot. I spotted the fallen leaf I had picked up earlier today with its shades of green, orange, yellow and brown from my kitchen counter. Holding the leaf we spoke about the purpose Allah has given to this leaf, the process it goes through and the beauty that is so visible through its submission. We spoke about similarities and differences between us and these leaves. We spoke about the purpose of our existence and beautifying our hearts and actions so we don’t lose focus of the never-ending beauty in Jannah for the muhsineen. Of course the biggest reward that comes with adopting the way of submission and ehsan through our daily lifestyle choices is the Perfect love of our Most Generous Lord.
Ultimately in all times and seasons, the most befitting response at the human level towards the knowledge that reaches us through the Quran and Sunnah which comes from a Divine level is:
رَضِیْتُ بِاللهِ رَبًّا وَّ بِالْاِسْلَامِ دِیْنًا وَّ بِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِیًّا
Oh Allah beautify our hearts with iman, rectify our actions through ehsan and grant us your nearness in this world and the Hereafter.
