Dhul Hijjah Food & Backpack Update

Here’s a quick update of our Dhul Hijjah Food and Backpack Drive:

Alhamdulillah, we raised more than 2500 pounds of food, collected and distributed 145 backpacks to children in need within our community! Our donations were shared with the Arab Community Centre of Toronto, the Etobicoke Food Assistance Program, and Nisa Homes.

Jazakumullahu Khair to all the volunteers who participated in our Packing Event and helped make food packages and backpack kits! Each back-to-school kit contained a backpack, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, ruler, pens, notebook/lined paper, and more! Thank you for helping bring joy to children in need!

Thank you to an extremely generous community for your contributions!

Foster Care and the Muslim Community Recap

Thank you Foster Link and Maple Star Services for an extremely beneficial and enlightening session on foster caregiving! It helped raise awareness about the importance of being involved in Foster Care giving as a community. Here’s what some of our attendees had to say after the session:

It was a much needed workshop. Cleared a lot of misconceptions about foster parenting. Also, it highlighted on the very real issue of Muslim kids in Foster care. Hearing the testimony of a Muslim couple was very helpful and heartwarming.” – Anonymous

“This was an eye-opening workshop. It was heart-wrenching and it made me realize the great need of having Muslim families in the Foster Care system as caregivers. I’ve come out of it with a greater level of admiration and respect for foster parents.” – S.P.

Dhul Hijjah Food and Backpack Drive

The Prophet SAWS has said about the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days…” (Bukhari)

Our Food and Backpack Drive is aimed at earning the pleasure of Allah in these ten beautiful days by collecting and distributing food items and school supplies for people in need. Drop off all non-perishable food items and school supplies in the cafeteria at Al Huda Institute, 5671 McAdam Rd, Mississauga, until August 19, 2018.

Let’s join this race for good deeds in the best ten days and take this opportunity to help families in need within the community!

Foster Care and the Muslim Community

The Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said, “The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this,” and he held his two fingers together to illustrate. [Bukhari]

There is a huge parallel between raising an orphan and fostering a child. They are similar in ways that we do not often think about. How much importance do we place on the subject of fostering? Is there a need for foster parents in the Muslim community?

Join us for a workshop on Thursday, August 9, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, to learn more about foster caregiving,  and how to become a foster caregiver. Get all your questions answered by a panel of speakers including social workers from a fostering agency, and Muslims who are currently involved in foster care. RSVP here.

Serving Humanity’s Ramadan Update

Through ‘Share the Blessings’, our Ramadan Food and Toy Drive collected and distributed 12,241 pounds of food within the local community. We were also able to distribute around 400 Eid gifts that brought smiles to children’s faces.

Serving Humanity would like to say Jazakumullahu Khair for the community’s generous contributions. Thank you for helping us make a difference in the lives of those in need.  A special shout-out to all of our volunteers for helping out with the packing events in Ramadan! The sorting, weighing, making food packages, gift-wrapping toys, would not have been possible without your contribution of time and efforts. May Allah accept from all of us and enable us to continue helping others!
